Conviction rate of NIA cases…phenomenal…!

As on December 5, 2024, as many as 140 cases have ended in conviction out of the total 147 decided cases.

New Delhi: India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) has achieved 95.23% conviction rate of the cases investigated by it. The conviction rate was 94.70% in 2023.

The information was shared by Minister of State (MoS) for Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai in a written reply to a question during the ongoing session of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Parliament.

The mandate of this specialized central counter-terrorism law enforcement agency pertains to investigation of scheduled offences like terror related offences, terror funding, FICN, human trafficking and cyber terrorism.

As on December 5, 2024, as many as 140 cases have ended in conviction out of the total 147 decided cases.

The agency has since inception registered 640 cases. There are 109 cases under active investigation and 395 under further investigation while 505 cases have been charge sheeted. Total 4174 accused have been arrested so far and 595 convicted.

According to further details in the reply, the NIA seized/attached total 543 (movable and immovable) properties under UA(P) Act, worth Rs.109.6 crore. 

There is a special cell in the NIA comprising two legal experts of eminence in investigation/ prosecution/ teaching of laws/judicial/ foreign services.

A CTRC (Counter Terrorism Research Cell) has been created in the NIA to encourage and foster doctoral research work in scheduled offences, investigation, prosecution, legal framework in terror cases, digital forensics, etc. and related subjects having a bearing on its functioning.

Moreover, three new verticals have been created in the NIA for cases related to cyber terrorism, explosives and prohibited arms and human trafficking.
