Chandigarh: The bye-elections for four Punjab Assembly Constituencies (ACs) will now be held on November 20, 2024 instead of November 13, 2024 as notified earlier.
As per the press release issued by the Election Commission of India (ECI), the polling for Dera Baba Nanak, Chabbewal (SC), Gidderbaha and Barnala (ACs) will now be held on Wednesday, November 20, 2024.
As scheduled earlier, the date of counting on Saturday, November 23, 2024 and completion of the poll on Monday, November 25, 29024 will, however, remain unchanged.
The revised decision of the ECI follows representations received from the political parties and social organizations requesting the change of the poll date on account of religious, cultural and social engagements on that day on the ground that these may cause inconvenience to a large number of voters.
Considering this, the ECI concluded that various logistics issues arising due to these large scale public engagements may reduce voters’ participation during the poll. Hence, the poll body decided to change the poll date.
The ECI had received representations to change the poll date of bye-elections for total 14 ACs including Punjab, Kerala and Uttar Pradesh. The bye-elections for 48 ACs and 2 Parliamentary Constituencies across 15 States were announced on October 15, 2024.
