Chandigarh: From now on, all vehicles on the National Highway – 44 from Ambala border to Kundli border of Sonipat will be under the strict watch of the Haryana Police.
For the purpose, total 128 CCTV cameras have been installed on this stretch of the NH – 44. The CCTV control room has been set up in Karnal at the office of Additional Director General of Police, Traffic and Highways.
The drivers violating traffic rules will be automatically issued challans.
Director General of Police (DGP), Haryana, Shatrujeet Kapur inaugurated this facility on the eve of Republic Day marking a significant step towards road safety and crime control. He appealed people to follow the road safety rules and especially avoid use of mobile phones while driving.
The cameras have been installed at 19 locations on the highway including Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and surveillance cameras at 9 and 10 locations respectively. ANPR cameras have been linked to Haryana Police’s Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) so that the complete history of the vehicles could be obtained.
DGP Kapur informed that total 72 ANPR, 38 surveillance and 18 evidence cameras have been installed on NH-44 passing through the state. These cameras are equipped with state-of-the-art technology.
With installation of these cameras, the sense of security among the vehicle drivers passing through the state will sure get a boost, as alerts about vehicles involved in criminal activities, stolen vehicles, etc. will automatically reach the control room. These alerts will be sent to the police stations facilitating timely action.
Such cameras have been installed in 10 districts of Haryana so far, including Yamunanagar, Kurukshetra, Karnal, Ambala, Panipat, Rohtak, Panchkula, Gurugram, Faridabad and Sonipat. Apart from this, challans are also issued through drones in Gurugram district to ensure compliance with traffic rules, added the DGP.
Notably, 657 less road accidents were reported in 2024 as compared to 2023. Similarly, the number of casualties in road accidents decreased by 279 and the injured by 432 in 2024. The fatal road accidents has also witnessed 5.65% decrease from 4652 in 2023 to 4389 this year.
In 2024, Haryana Police conducted 2366 road safety awareness campaigns through which 3,16, 414 persons including children reached out. Similarly, regular campaigns are conducted to ensure compliance with lane driving, under which challans have been issued to 3,86, 266 vehicle drivers violating lane driving rules.
